Ohakune

Ohakune is a small alpine town nestled at the base of Mount Ruapehu in New Zealand’s North Island, known for its mix of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and quirky charm. Often called the “Carrot Capital” thanks to the giant carrot sculpture that greets visitors, Ohakune is much more than a novelty—it’s a year-round destination where snow-capped peaks meet lush forests and rivers. In winter, it serves as the main gateway to the Tūroa Ski Field, offering some of the country’s best skiing and snowboarding.

When the snow melts, the landscape transforms into a haven for hikers and mountain bikers, with trails like the Old Coach Road weaving through native bush and historic viaducts. The town itself has a laid-back vibe, with cosy cafés, artisan shops, and friendly locals creating a welcoming atmosphere. It also hosts events like the Big Mountain Short Film Festival, bringing a dose of creativity to this outdoor paradise. Whether you're here for the slopes, the trails, or just to relax and take in the mountain air, Ohakune offers an authentic slice of New Zealand's heartland, rich with history, scenery, and small-town spirit.
